1. Mozilla doesn’t want to be affiliated with bad forks of their software (which they have no control over).
2. Mozilla doesn’t want to lose the Firefox trademark if it ever becomes a generic trademark (like when people say Photoshopping when talking about editing images or Googling when they mean searching).

This becomes a bigger problem when certain groups distribute modified versions of Mozilla’s software but keeping the Firefox name without Mozilla’s trademarked logo. Debian has recently got in trouble for this and Mozilla presented two options:

1. Don’t use the Firefox name so that the versions aren’t affiliated with Mozilla.
