With the release of new versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox, the Web has firefox_explorer.jpgbeen abuzz with reports on the second outbreak of the browser wars, pitting Microsoft and Mozilla in an overt fight to the death for market share. But that fight is more subtle than most people might assume.

"Everybody’s got it wrong," said Joseph Wilcox, senior analyst with Jupiter Research and an expert on Microsoft. "You see a lot of focus on market share. Someone will draw up numbers showing that Firefox is gaining at the expense of Internet Explorer, and it’s actually the wrong metric to be looking at."

And the right metric? According to Wilcox, the magic question is not how many people use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but how many people use it along with IE.

"It’s how many people are using IE and something else, compared to just three years ago, when they were more likely to use IE and nothing else," said Wilcox. NewsFactor Network
