New Tool Bypasses Internet Censorship
Published December 2nd, 2006 in All Categories, Anonymity, Privacy
A new tool aimed at circumventing Internet filters used by some governments was released today,
offering hopes for freer access to information for activists, journalists and others.
Psiphon, developed at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, is a human rights software project developed by the Citizen Lab at the Munk Centre for International Studies that allows citizens in uncensored countries to provide unfettered access to the Net through their home computers to friends and family members who live behind firewalls of states that censor.
Psiphon, released through the Open Net Initiative, a project of four universities in the United States, Canada and Britain, ‘operates on private social networks of trust,’ said Ronald Deibert, director of Citizen Lab. Deibert said psiphon functions like a ‘virtual private network’ used by many companies and organisations to securely transmit data, but without the cumbersome installation of VPNs.
