Internet Explorer 7, the first major overhaul of Microsoft’s Web browser since 2001, may knock your IE7.jpgsocks off if you’ve been using its predecessor exclusively. But if you’re among the millions who’ve switched to Opera or Firefox, IE7’s new features may strike you as about as fresh as the remote control. Been there, done that.

While Microsoft focused its energies elsewhere, Opera, produced by a Norwegian company, and Firefox, an open-source project of the Mozilla Foundation, gained legions of devoted fans — particularly among experienced and influential users.
