With IE7, Microsoft Finally Catches Up to Competition
Published December 14th, 2006 in All Categories, Internet Explorer 7
The latest release finds IE looking and acting a lot more like its competition, Firefox and Opera. It
features support for RSS feeds, a built-in search box and most notably tabbed browsing, a superior way of navigating the Web for people who tend to have multiple sites open at once. Internet Explorer 7, the first major overhaul of Microsoft’s Web browser since 2001, may knock your socks off if you’ve been using its predecessor exclusively.
However, if you’re among the millions who’ve switched to Opera or Firefox, IE7’s new features may strike you as about as fresh as the remote control. Been there, done that.
As Microsoft focused its energies elsewhere, Opera, produced by a Norwegian company, and Firefox, an open source of the Mozilla Foundation, gained legions of devoted fans — particularly among experienced and influential users.
The sleeker, faster, more flexible alternative browsers cut IE’s market share from 93 percent two years ago to about 86 percent today.
Rather than leapfrogging ahead of the competition, Microsoft largely just draws even with IE7. Technology News: Consumer: With IE7, Microsoft Finally Catches Up to Competition
