Microsoft’s Internet Explorer remains the most popular browser in the world. This despite report after report calling the program less secure than Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and other free competitors. Yet IE remains the preferred browser of nearly four out of five people surfing the Web.

Modern browsers are much better than their predecessors at keeping your Web activity private and your data safe. Still, you may not have your browser configured to provide optimum security. Take a few minutes to give Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 a safety check.

As promised, Microsoft on Tuesday started releasing a version of Internet Explorer 7 without the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check.

Security researchers are again arguing over who is responsible — Microsoft or third-party developers — for protocol-handling bugs after a researcher said late last week that Internet Explorer 7 can be used to trick users into launching malware.

Although Microsoft Corp. fixed four flaws in Internet Explorer (IE) yesterday, it did not address a protocol-handling problem that could trick users into downloading malware, a move that surprised at least one security researcher. The company, however, said it has reopened its investigation and may provide a patch in the future.
