Mozilla fixes upgrade flaw in Firefox

Mozilla has fixed a flaw in Firefox’s upgrade mechanism that had prevented many users from migrating to the newer version 3.5.

The beleaguered EU edition of Windows 7 has taken another twist, with Microsoft agreeing to randomise the list of the most popular browsers during the operating system’s setup.

Mozilla will add a new lockdown feature to Firefox 3.6 that will prevent developers from sneaking addons into the program, the company said.

The upcoming Firefox 3.5.3 and Firefox 3.0.14 releases, currently in beta, will check the version of Adobe Flash plug-in installed in the browser and warn the user if that plug-in is out of date.

Mozilla Corp. on Tuesday patched 12 security vulnerabilities in Firefox 3, just days before it hopes to roll out the newest beta of its next open-source browser, Firefox 3.5.

Mozilla knows that you downloaded and installed Firefox when you launch the browser for the first time and the welcome landing page is displayed. But the organization found that there are 50,000 canceled installations every day, which translates to 18 million annually.

Although Firefox 3.5 is yet to be released, Mozilla has already started planning the next version, which has tentatively been designated 3.6, with the codename Namoroka. Firefox 3.6 is loosely scheduled for release in 2010.

Mozilla’s Firefox Web browser has made impressive market share gains in Europe over the past few years. In the latest marketshare report released by StatCounter, Firefox 3 has finally surpassed Internet Explorer 7 as the most popular browser in Europe in a breakdown by version number.

Online attack code has been released targeting a critical, unpatched flaw in the Firefox browser. The attack code, written by security researcher Guido Landi, was published on several security sites Wednesday, sending Firefox developers scrambling to patch the flaw.
