Mozilla Corporation has pushed back the release of the third, and possibly final, beta for Firefox 3.1 by a week to allow the firm to fix some bugs in the upcoming version of its open source browser.

A bug found in all major browsers could make it easier for criminals to steal online banking credentials using a new type of attack called "in-session phishing," according to researchers at security vendor Trusteer.

Back in August, the Internet Explorer team announced the availability of Internet Explorer Beta 2 and it became obvious that Internet Explorer 8 would be Microsoft’s preferred browser in its next version of Windows. Without any doubt, Internet Explorer 8 is the default browser installed in Windows 7.

Internet Explorer was used by 68.15% of Web surfers monitored in December, down from 69.77% in November and 71.27% in October, according to preliminary figures published by Net Applications on its Hitslink Web site Friday. IE’s share has slipped from around 75% since the start of 2008.

First Look – Microsoft quietly released the first update to its IE8 beta 2 to its closest partners last week. This new version is marked as “Release Candidate 1” and is expected to be the final IE8 pre-release update Microsoft intends to make available to the public sometime in the first quarter of 2009.

Browser security seems to be a big issue this week. First we had the IE patch drama, then comes a dust-up over whether Firefox is fit for enterprise use. The Mozilla browser topped enterprise app whitelister Bit9’s list of popular apps with security vulnerabilities.

Browser security is quite a popular topic these days. As it turns out, password managers also have their share of security flaws that can lead to the disclosure of passwords and the like, which brings us to a bit of bad news for users of Safari.
